    Southeast Asia: A Health Overview

Southeast Asia is one of the most popular travel regions for UK holidaymakers, backpackers, and business travellers. Countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines offer incredible experiences — but each comes with specific health considerations. At Gloucester Travel Clinic, we see hundreds of patients every year preparing for trips to this region. Our pharmacists provide destination-specific advice based on NaTHNaC guidance to ensure you're fully protected.

    Recommended Vaccines for Southeast Asia

For all travellers to Southeast Asia: - Hepatitis A — Essential. The risk from contaminated food and water is significant across the region. - Typhoid — Strongly recommended, especially if eating street food or travelling outside tourist areas. - DTP Booster — If your last dose was more than 10 years ago. - MMR — Ensure you've had 2 doses. Depending on your itinerary: - Hepatitis B — Recommended for extended stays, healthcare work, or activities that could expose you to blood. - Japanese Encephalitis — Recommended if spending extended time in rural or agricultural areas, particularly during the rainy season. - Rabies — Strongly recommended for Cambodia, Vietnam, and anywhere you may encounter stray dogs or bats. Access to post-exposure treatment can be limited outside major cities. - Cholera — Consider if travelling to remote areas during outbreaks. Not required for Southeast Asia: - Yellow Fever (unless arriving from an endemic country) - Meningitis ACWY (not a significant risk in this region)

    Malaria Risk in Southeast Asia

Malaria risk in Southeast Asia is generally lower than in Africa, but it still exists in specific areas: Higher risk areas: - Myanmar (throughout much of the country) - Cambodia (border areas, especially with Thailand and Vietnam) - Laos (rural areas) - Vietnam (Central Highlands, border areas) - Indonesia (outside Bali and Java — particularly Papua and Nusa Tenggara) Low or no risk: - Thailand (main tourist areas including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui) - Bali, Indonesia - Major cities across the region - Malaysia (Peninsular — main tourist areas) Our pharmacists will check your exact itinerary against current NaTHNaC country information to determine whether antimalarials are recommended for your trip.

Dengue Fever & Other Mosquito-Borne Diseases

While malaria risk is localised, dengue fever is widespread across all of Southeast Asia and there is no vaccine or preventive medication available for UK travellers. Dengue is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes which bite during the daytime — different from the night-biting malaria mosquitoes. This means you need to use insect repellent throughout the day, not just at dusk and dawn. Key prevention measures: - Use DEET-based repellent (at least 50%) throughout the day - Wear long sleeves and trousers where practical - Use air conditioning or screened accommodation - Eliminate standing water near your accommodation Other mosquito-borne risks include Zika virus (important for pregnant women or those planning pregnancy) and Chikungunya.

Food & Water Safety in Southeast Asia

Travellers' diarrhoea affects up to 50% of visitors to Southeast Asia. Minimise your risk: - Drink bottled water (check the seal is intact) or use water purification methods - Avoid ice unless you're confident it's made from purified water (major hotels and tourist restaurants usually use safe ice) - Eat freshly cooked, hot food — street food is generally safe if it's cooked in front of you and served piping hot - Peel fruit yourself — avoid pre-cut fruit from street stalls - Carry oral rehydration sachets and consider taking loperamide for emergency use - Wash hands frequently or use alcohol-based hand sanitiser If symptoms are severe (bloody diarrhoea, high fever, lasting more than 48 hours), seek medical attention.
