    Overview

Malaria is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions. There is no vaccine widely available for malaria, so antimalarial medication combined with bite-prevention measures is essential for travellers visiting at-risk areas.

At Gloucester Travel Clinic, our pharmacists conduct a thorough malaria risk assessment based on your destination, accommodation type, time of year, and personal medical history to recommend the most appropriate antimalarial medication.

    Antimalarial Medications We Prescribe

    Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone)

Taken daily, starting 1–2 days before travel. Well-tolerated with minimal side effects. Suitable for short trips and last-minute travellers.

    Doxycycline

Taken daily, starting 1–2 days before travel. Cost-effective option. Also provides protection against some other infections. Not suitable during pregnancy.

    Mefloquine (Lariam)

Taken weekly, starting 2–3 weeks before travel. Good for long trips. Not suitable for those with a history of depression or seizures.

    Bite Prevention Advice

Antimalarials are most effective when combined with bite-prevention strategies. We advise on:

    • DEET-based insect repellents (50% concentration recommended)
    • Permethrin-treated clothing and mosquito nets
    • Covering exposed skin during dusk and dawn
    • Staying in air-conditioned or screened accommodation where possible

Why Choose a Pharmacist for Antimalarials?

As qualified independent prescribers, our pharmacists can assess, prescribe, and dispense antimalarials in a single appointment — saving you time compared to GP referrals. We follow NaTHNaC and PHE guidelines to ensure evidence-based recommendations tailored to your specific trip.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I start taking antimalarials?+
This depends on the medication. Malarone and Doxycycline should be started 1–2 days before entering a malaria zone. Mefloquine should be started 2–3 weeks before travel to check for side effects.
Do I need antimalarials for all tropical destinations?+
Not all tropical countries have malaria risk. Our pharmacists will check the latest NaTHNaC guidance for your specific destinations and advise whether antimalarials are recommended.
Can I get antimalarials on the NHS?+
Antimalarials for travel are not available on the NHS. They are a private prescription. We offer competitive pricing and will advise on the most cost-effective option for your trip duration.
    Are antimalarials safe during pregnancy?+
Some antimalarials are not recommended during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, our pharmacists will advise on the safest options and whether travel to malaria-risk areas is advisable.
