    Overview

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. It causes severe, watery diarrhoea that can lead to fatal dehydration within hours if untreated.

At Gloucester Travel Clinic, we offer Dukoral®, the only cholera vaccine licensed in the UK. It's an oral vaccine — taken as a drink mixed with water — making it needle-free and convenient. Dukoral also provides some cross-protection against enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), a common cause of travellers' diarrhoea.

While the risk of cholera for most travellers is very low, vaccination is recommended for humanitarian aid workers, healthcare professionals working in outbreak zones, and travellers visiting areas with active cholera outbreaks and limited access to safe water.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dukoral the same as a travellers' diarrhoea vaccine?+
Dukoral is primarily a cholera vaccine, but it provides some cross-protection against ETEC (enterotoxigenic E. coli), which is one of the most common causes of travellers' diarrhoea. However, it does not protect against all causes of travellers' diarrhoea.
    How is Dukoral taken?+
Dukoral is an oral vaccine — it's dissolved in a buffer solution mixed with water and drunk. Each dose must be taken on an empty stomach (1 hour before or after food). The two doses should be taken 1–6 weeks apart, with the course completed at least 1 week before travel.
Is the cholera vaccine available on the NHS?+
Cholera vaccination may be available from some GPs on the NHS for travel, but availability varies. We offer it at £35 per dose with appointments available this week.
    Can children take Dukoral?+
Yes. Children aged 2–5 require 3 doses instead of 2. Children aged 6+ follow the standard 2-dose adult schedule. The vaccine is not licensed for children under 2.
