Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio Booster
Booster vaccination recommended for travellers whose last dose was more than 10 years ago — protect yourself against three serious diseases with a single injection.
Overview
Diphtheria, tetanus, and polio are three serious but preventable diseases. In the UK, childhood vaccination provides initial protection, but immunity wanes over time. A booster is recommended if your last dose was more than 10 years ago and you're travelling to at-risk areas.
Diphtheria is a bacterial infection affecting the throat and airways, still common in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. Tetanus is caused by bacteria entering wounds — risk exists worldwide but is higher where medical facilities are limited. Polio remains endemic in parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, with outbreaks occasionally occurring in Africa.
At Gloucester Travel Clinic, we administer the Revaxis® vaccine, a single injection providing combined protection against all three diseases. Most adults in the UK should have had 5 doses of each vaccine through childhood and school boosters — if so, no further boosters are needed. If you're unsure of your vaccination history, we can advise.

Do You Need a Booster?
You may need a DTP booster if:
- Your last booster was more than 10 years ago
- You've had fewer than 5 lifetime doses of each vaccine
- You're unsure of your vaccination history
- You're travelling to areas where polio is endemic or has recently been reported
- You're travelling to areas where diphtheria is more common than in the UK
Our pharmacists can review your vaccination record (if available) and advise whether a booster is needed.
