Overview
Meningococcal meningitis is a serious bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be fatal within hours if not treated promptly, and even with treatment, 10–15% of cases result in death.
The Meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four serogroups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y. At Gloucester Travel Clinic, we administer the Nimenrix® or Menveo® vaccine, providing broad protection for travellers.
Vaccination is mandatory for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia, with a valid vaccination certificate required for visa applications. It is also strongly recommended for travel to the African meningitis belt — a region stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east.
Who Needs Meningitis ACWY Vaccination?
- Hajj and Umrah pilgrims: Saudi Arabia requires proof of Meningitis ACWY vaccination within the last 5 years for visa issuance
- Travellers to the African meningitis belt: Senegal, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, and surrounding countries
- University students: If travelling abroad for study, particularly if not vaccinated as part of the UK adolescent programme
- Close-contact travellers: Backpackers, hostel-stayers, and those attending large gatherings or festivals

Hajj & Umrah Requirements
Saudi Arabia requires the following for Hajj and Umrah visa applications:
- Meningitis ACWY vaccination no more than 5 years and no less than 10 days before arrival
- A valid vaccination certificate — we issue this on-site at the time of vaccination
