    Overview

Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi, spread through contaminated food and water. It's endemic in many parts of South Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and South-East Asia, with an estimated 11–20 million cases globally each year.

At Gloucester Travel Clinic, we offer two types of typhoid vaccine: the injectable vaccine (Typhim Vi®) providing protection for approximately 3 years, and the oral capsule vaccine (Vivotif®) which may be preferred by patients who dislike injections.

Typhoid vaccination is strongly recommended by NaTHNaC and Public Health England for travellers to endemic areas, particularly those visiting friends and relatives, staying in rural areas, or eating street food.

    • South-East Asia — Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia
    • Central & South America — Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala

Even vaccinated travellers should practise careful food and water hygiene, as the vaccine provides approximately 70–80% protection.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is typhoid vaccination available on the NHS?+
Typhoid vaccination may be available free from your GP for travel purposes. However, many GP surgeries no longer offer travel vaccines. We provide both injectable and oral options at competitive prices with no waiting list.
Which typhoid vaccine is better — injectable or oral?+
Both provide similar levels of protection (approximately 70–80%). The injectable vaccine is a single dose and may be more convenient. The oral vaccine involves 3 capsules over 5 days but avoids an injection. Our pharmacists will help you choose based on your preferences and travel timeline.
How far in advance should I get the typhoid vaccine?+
The injectable vaccine should be given at least 2 weeks before travel. The oral vaccine should be completed at least 1 week before departure. We recommend booking your appointment 6–8 weeks before travel.
Can children receive the typhoid vaccine?+
The injectable vaccine can be given from age 2 years. The oral vaccine is suitable from age 5 years (as children need to be able to swallow capsules). Our pharmacists will advise on the best option for your child.
