MMR Vaccination

Measles, Mumps & Rubella — private catch-up vaccination for adults and children who missed their routine immunisations or require a second dose.

Pharmacist-administered 2 Gloucester locations Appointments available this week

    Overview

The MMR vaccine protects against three serious viral infections: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (German Measles). While MMR is part of the routine NHS childhood schedule, many adults and young people remain under-vaccinated or have only received one dose — leaving them vulnerable to outbreaks.

Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases in the world and can cause severe complications including encephalitis and death. Rubella poses particular risks to pregnant women, as infection in early pregnancy can cause serious birth defects (congenital rubella syndrome).

At Gloucester Travel Clinic, we provide private MMR vaccination for individuals who need a catch-up dose, are unsure of their vaccination history, or require documented proof of immunity — for example for university, healthcare employment, or international travel.

    Who Should Get Vaccinated?

    • Adults born after 1970 who have not received 2 doses of MMR and have no documented immunity
    • University students who are unvaccinated or only had 1 dose
    • Healthcare and childcare workers requiring evidence of 2-dose MMR vaccination
    • Women of childbearing age who are not immune to rubella (must not be pregnant)
    • Individuals travelling to areas with lower vaccination rates or active outbreaks
    • Anyone who is unsure of their vaccination history and wants protection

    • Immunocompromised individuals
    • People with a severe allergy to neomycin or gelatin
    • Children under 12 months

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is MMR available free on the NHS for adults?+
MMR is offered free on the NHS to children at 12–13 months and again at 3 years 4 months. Adults who missed their NHS doses can often get a free catch-up from their GP — but if you'd prefer a quick, convenient appointment without waiting, we offer it privately at £45 per dose with same-week availability.
How do I know if I've already had both MMR doses?+
Check your Red Book (child health record) or contact your GP surgery to request your immunisation history. If records are unavailable, our pharmacists can arrange a blood test to check immunity levels, or simply vaccinate to ensure protection.
Is the claim that MMR causes autism true?+
No. This claim originated from a 1998 paper that was fully retracted due to serious ethical violations and data fraud. Extensive research involving millions of children worldwide has conclusively found no link between the MMR vaccine and autism.
Do I need MMR before going to uni?+
Many universities strongly recommend that students have had 2 MMR doses before joining, as measles and mumps outbreaks can spread quickly in student populations. We can provide vaccination and a record of your doses.
